AMBASSADOR...YOU SPOIL US!

Dear Readers,

Sorry not to have been in touch for a while, but things have been a little hectic around Treave Towers just lately. Time for a 'catch up'.

Last week, CoaST, the sustainable tourism network, were kind enough to invite me to be an Ambassador for their project. After a bit of argy bargy about how much Ferrero Rocher was involved and did the residence have its own staff and driver, we eventually agreed that I would just do the best I could with an old truck, Jake as driver and a couple of squares of Cadbury's Dairy Milk.

My first official engagement was to a cream tea at the Alverton Manor Hotel ( http://www.alvertonmanor.co.uk/%20)to ) to meet up with the other 'Ambos', have a bit of a chat and generally 'get with the programme'. Unfortunately, the event coincided with a meeting of the Fostering Panel, I went into the wrong room and ended up having to explain that I was not 'parenting material'...'ask any of the kids on the site and they will back me up on that!' I said. Anyway, a jolly time was had by all and Their Excellencies went on to do good works.

'In his new role as chauffeur, Jake waits patiently outside the Alverton Manor to drive His Excellency back to the residence.'

On Thursday, the truck went in for its MOT. To pass, it had to have a set of new number plates because the speeding cameras were having trouble picking up the image due to 'de-lamination'...the fact that the truck has a top speed of 27 mph downhill with a following wind apparently holds little sway in a magistrates court.

Anyway, new plates were produced amidst a flurry of quips such as 'have we got any Roman Numerals left...truck's so old it seems a shame to spoil it with all this new fangled Arabic stuff?' ...comes to the point of collection and the garage owner, who I have known and traded with for some years, asked me to produce the Vehicle Registration Certificate and my driving license to confirm my identity and ownership.

Now, most of you have a two-part driving license...one part of which has a photograph. I have a six-part license, held together by browning sticky tape and no photograph...it was after all issued when I was 18 years old and has had a hard a life, like its holder, who is also held together by browning sticky tape!

'Question is' said the garage owner slowly 'how do I know you are who you say you are?'

'I'm an Ambassador' I said, 'I have Diplomatic Immunity.'

'Fair enough' he said, 'sign here.'

ALL ABOARD...!

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trusts have again collaborated with the Steamship Company to run two wildlife specials onboard Scillonian III, to provide passengers to the Isles of Scilly with the opportunity to spot the diverse marine life that use the local waters. On Saturdays 26th September and 10th October, the Trust’s marine biodiversity guide Paul Semmens will travel with passengers to help them experience what can be spotted living in the surrounding seas.

Paul has been a RSPB guide on the boat for many years and is currently working onboard the Scillonian surveying and guiding for the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust’s Marine Biodiversity Project. Paul says, ‘It is great to be able to help the Wildlife Trusts by educating people onboard the Scillonian, and showing them what they would otherwise be missing. So far this year I have seen several minke whales, bottlenose dolphins as well as good numbers of harbour porpoises, common dolphins, basking sharks and ocean sunfish. We have also seen a huge variety of seabirds including balearic and sooty shearwaters, storm petrels, arctic, pomarine and great skuas, and sabine’s gull.’

September and October are well known for rare birds on Scilly, arriving on the islands from as far as Europe or even America. This time of year is also noted for the variety of species in the sea, with previous trips seeing ocean sunfish, orcas, minke whales and harbour porpoises as well as bottlenose, risso’s and common dolphins. Paul continues, ‘The Scillonian is certainly the best way to see dolphins and whales. So far this year, I have seen animals on every trip.’

The Scillonian sails at 9.15 am and leaves St Mary’s at 4.30 pm. To receive a discount when using the Scillonian, just mention Cornwall Wildlife Trust when booking and you will only pay the concessionary ticket price of £25, a saving of £10.

To book your trip, contact the Steamship Company on 0845 710 5555 or email sales@islesofscilly-travel.co.uk. Alternatively visit the Isles of Scilly Travel Centre, Quay Street, Penzance TR18 4BZ. WHICH WAY IS SOUTH?

Swallows don't have SatNav...which is quite good because it would always send them down the A38 rather than the shorter, quicker A30...!

They don't seem in any hurry to leave, given the beautiful early autumn weather we are enjoying here in Cornwall.

Senior Estates Manager spent a couple of hours on the kayak yesterday in Sennen Cove and brought home a bucketful of fish (Gurnard, Pollock, Mackerel) which were duly grilled on the barbie for breakfast this morning. Perfick!

.
'Thanks for a lovely stay.

Excellent facilities, great location, a deserving gold medal (hurrah!) and we'll certainly be recommending the site to friends and look forward to coming back ourselves.

Missing the pair of barn owls already.

Although, v glad to be back in our own bed. Ahhh bliss.

All the best

Amanda and David'
.
Thanks A&D, great spot on the Barn Owls. Now there are fewer people around they are getting a little more adventurous and visible in their wanderings. N

'We are delighted to advise you that Professor Bellamy has awarded Lower Treave Caravan & Camping Park with the Gold accolade for 2009. '

Thanks to everyone who makes this award worthwhile...to those of us who work at Lower Treave it obviously means a great deal, but as they say at the Oscars,  'we couldn't have done it without...

Everyone who turned off a light when it wasn't needed.
Everyone who saw a plant or animal they hadn't seen before.
Everyone who spent some time sorting out their recycling into the correct bin.
Everyone who gazed in wonder at the night sky.
Everyone who gave someone else a bit of time, space and quiet to enjoy their holiday.
Everyone who got on a bus.
Everyone who put a few coins in the Cornwall Wildlife Trust tin as they drank their coffee.
Everyone who asked about solar panels and wind turbines.
Everyone who said 'we'll be back'.

To everyone...from Lower Treave...thank you.

LONE SHARK RAISES INTEREST

. A young basking shark, which stranded on a beach in west Cornwall in early August has been the first of its kind in England to be examined by veterinary pathologists. At over four metres long, the fish was so huge it wouldn't fit on the examination table and was too heavy to be weighed on their scales. The male shark washed ashore at Sennen Cove and was reported to Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Strandings Network. Joanna Osborn, who was on duty that day, took the call and asked local volunteer Rory Goodall if he could go down to the beach to record the animal. Rory was unable to see any obvious cause of death and he found that, unusually, the specimen was very fresh in comparison to other basking sharks the Marine Strandings Network had recorded previously in Cornwall. It was, therefore, a prime candidate for a post-mortem examination. "Usually the basking sharks we've recorded are very decomposed" said Joanna Osborn, "so we realised that this was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about this amazing fish which we see so often here in the summer, but about which so little is known." "I checked with our partners at the Institute of Zoology, who are studying basking sharks as well as other marine species under the collaborative UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme, and they were really pleased that we might have one to examine." "Normally a team of Network volunteers would be mustered to lift an animal onto a trailer" added Rory, "but as you can imagine, we don't have the equipment or manpower to move a shark, even one this small! So we were very grateful to Sue Nicholls from Cornwall Council, who agreed that their Beach Management Team would transport the shark to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in Truro where it could be examined." James Barnett, veterinary pathologist at the VLA conducted the examination and concluded: “This young male basking shark was in reasonable body condition and there was evidence that it had fed recently. It appeared to have a gastritis, as the stomach lining was inflamed. There was some damage to the gill slits, which could mean that it stranded alive. But there was no obvious reason for its death, although we're still waiting for other test results to come through. It was a very rare opportunity for us, and a first for Cornwall." Basking sharks are the second largest fish in the world and are frequently seen around the coast of Cornwall, feeding on zooplankton as they cruise gracefully through the water. They can filter 6,000 litres of water through their gills every hour and grow up to 11 meters long. The Trust welcomes reports of any stranded sharks, or other marine animals on the beach, to its Marine Strandings Hotline on 0845 201 2626. As sharks decompose quickly, the public are urged to call right away. For more information on strandings, the Marine Strandings Network has a website at www.cwtstrandings.org. and sightings of any live marine animals can be reported via the Trust's website at http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/. .

GIVNG BLOOD

. Thanks to Julie for donating this item to the Lower Treavers Hockey Team for next year! . We finished 9th out of 11 in the summer league and had a lot of fun scrapping around against some pretty organised and determined sides. Thanks to Pete for all the organisation and all the players who turned up for a game. . Which reminds me....Cornish Pirates take on Harlequins at the Stoop today in a pre-season friendly...a fixture which I am sure will en'capsulate' all that is great about rugby. For extra supplies...see Julie! . . . Real or fake....? The coach isn't saying! Probably real blood, but almost certainly fake legs. .

THE BALLAD OF HURRICANE BILL

Hurricane Bill, that ‘twas its name, It brewed up dark and stormy, And as he watched the weather charts It put the wind up Normy. ‘Tie down your kids’ in vain he cried, But not because of weather, They were getting on his nerves, Bikes racing hell for leather. ‘Advise your wives’ he shouted out, To wear something less floating, The wind will catch her fair and square, And flight times we’ll be quoting.’ ‘Take down your flags and lower your masts, Whatever be their colour. Turn off your fairy lights and lamps, Sure life will be much duller.’ ‘For we must ride this great storm out, And all come through the weather, ‘Cause when you camp at Lower Treave, We’re all in it together!’ ‘But wait’ cried Norm, ‘the chart is wrong, This weather’s for another, This hurricane won’t come to us, It’s going to Bill’s Mother!’ Hence the saying ‘It’s looking black over Bill’s Mother’s!
.

PADDLING TO SAVE DOLPHINS!

. Gareth Logan and Will Brawn, from Polzeath, are passionate about Cornwall’s marine life and have decided to take action to do something to help it. They will be walking and paddleboarding from Polzeath to Lands End at the beginning of September in a bid to raise money for Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Strandings Network. The boys are hoping the people of Cornwall will help them reach their £1000 target by sponsoring them at www.justgiving.com/savecornwallsdolphins. . Will says: “Being a surfer, I spend a lot of time in the sea, and feel an attachment to the coastline. I’ve come to realise how fragile an environment it is, that really needs looking after. My friend Gareth and I wanted to combine our love of the sea, whilst helping it out at the same time. So this paddle seemed like perfect way to do that. Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Strandings Network does great work in helping our dolphins and other cetaceans, which we both really care about, so we thought it was a great charity to support.” . The boys hope to have a suitable weather window between the 1st and 14th September when their walk and paddleboard challenge will take place. They already have sponsorship from Mountain Warehouse, Nineplus, Cornish Rock Tors and Wave Hunters and the use of a very special paddle board from Surf’s Up Surf School. Will will be using the same board as that used by James Cracknell in his cross Channel paddle with Surfs Up’s Pete Craske in 2005. . Will says “At least I know the board’s been given a proper test run in similar conditions! So I feel confident my equipment will stand me in good stead, now it’s just down to my endurance and experience in the sea.” . As well as completing the physical challenge they intend to play several gigs with their band, Droptone, along the way where they hope to generate more fundraising opportunities, including prize draws. Dates confirmed include The Tubestation, Polzeath on Monday 31st of August to kick the event off and the Old Albion Inn, Crantock, on Thursday 3rd of September. There will be more dates to follow. Everyone is invited to come along and support them at these events and help their fundraising efforts. . Cornwall Wildlife Trust developed the Marine Strandings Network in response to the many dead dolphins that wash up on our beaches each year and the Network is now the recognised recorder of dead dolphins for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The Network has a Strandings Hotline which is manned by volunteers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to receive reports of dead dolphins from the public, the number to call if you find one is 0845 201 2626. The 120 strong volunteers which make up the Network record, photograph and collect vital data from the dead dolphins. They also secure and deliver the dolphins to Veterinary Laboratories Agency Truro for post mortem examination, to help determine the cause of death. . Ruth Williams, Marine Conservation Officer for the Trust says, “The information collected by the Marine Strandings Network and through the post mortem examinations is incredibly important for improving our understanding of the biology and ecology of our dolphin species, the threats they face and how we can reduce these.” . Ruth continues, “It is brilliant that these two young men want to undertake such a big challenge with the sole aim of raising money to help the Trust’s Marine Strandings Network. We wish them well and will be closely following their progress along the coast, maybe they’ll be lucky enough to encounter dolphins along the route!” . If you’d like to sponsor Will and Gareth and help them reach their £1000 target please go to www.justgiving.com/savecornwallsdolphins. All proceeds will be donated to Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Strandings Network. For more information about the challenge call Gareth on 07980 018959, or Will on 07961 880989 or visit http://www.cwtstrandings.org/ . .

CORNWALL WILDLIFE TRUST VOLUNTEERS AT NUMBER 10

. Two volunteers for Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trusts have attended an event at Downing Street which celebrated their commitment to land and marine conservation work. Prime Minister Rt Hon Gordon Brown held a reception in the garden at Number 10 (on Wednesday 22 July) to personally thank the hard-working individuals who give their time freely to better our environment. Over 40 volunteers who work for The Wildlife Trusts across the UK were invited along with those from other environmental organisations. . The Prime Minister said, . "I am grateful for the contribution that people right across the country make every day to their local environmental and wildlife projects, giving up their time without pay. The inspirational work they do helps create a better world for us all. It is my pleasure to welcome these volunteers to No 10, so I can say thank you in person." . Don't forget to order your Wild Cornwall calendars in time for Christmas. Full details at: . http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/supportus/shop.htm . . Remember, Lower Treave is 'Miss July'! .

MUCH APPRECIATED - LOWER TREAVE REVIEW

After a long day at 'the office', it was nice to come in last night and see this on the email:
.
'We have just returned home from our week's stay with you and just wanted to thank you for a great stay. You run the campsite really well in a very relaxed manner which suited us down to the ground. When we revisit Cornwall sometime in the future we will definitely be making a booking to return to Lower Treave. Many thanks L & J, Nottingham.'
.
Your comments are very much appreciated and we look forward to your return.
.
Don't forget, anyone can make a review of Lower Treave, either by dropping us a line which we will show here or using one of the feedback sites such as Trip Adviser or UK Campsite.
.
Busy changeover weekend coming to an end now (49 out, 54 in) so time for everybody to relax and enjoy their holidays as the site moves into it's daily routines...open the gate, put the rolls and croissants into the shop, get the milk, check the toilets, open the shop, mow the pitches, check the toilets, book in the new-arrivals, check the toilets, close the shop, do the VAT, reply to the enquiries, write the blog, walk the site, check the toilets, lock the gate....open the gate...it's a long day at the office, and very rewarding when a customer likes what you do...thanks L&J.
.
Weather...grey, but warm and dry and the beach is very 'do-able'. Enjoy your day.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER

. For many people, the Perseid meteor shower in August is one of the astronomical highlights. This is the richest and broadest meteor shower of the entire year, lasting a couple of weeks and rewarding observers with multiple bright meteors every night. You will always see more meteors from a dark site after midnight, but it’s hard to miss a meteor if you spend any time watching the sky during this period. This year a bright Last Quarter Moon rises around midnight, cutting down the number of meteors you will see. . Perseid meteors peak on August 12!

THE FOG FACTORY

.
Crazy weather yesterday. Whilst on the site we basked in warm sunshine, and Penzance was positively Mediterranean....Sennen Cove sat in the swirling mist. I am told by the aviators at Lands End Airport that the valley running up from Sennen Cove towards the airport is known as 'The Fog Factory'. Certain combinations of wind, humidity and pressure cause this phenomenon. More of the same today? Check out the forecast here: . http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/sw/penzance_forecast_weather.html .

30 YEARS AGO TODAY...

For those of you bemoaning a couple of days of inclement weather and recounting how summers were much better 'when I were a lad', think back to this day thirty summers ago...
.
The 1979 Fastnet race was the twenty-eighth competition held since 1925, generally every two years. In 1979, it was the climax of the five-race Admiral's Cup competition, as it had been since 1957.
. Storms during the race wreaked havoc on over 306 yachts taking part in the biennial race, resulting in 15 fatalities. Emergency services and civilian vessels from around the west side of the English Channel were summoned to aid what was the largest rescue operation in peace-time. Those involved included naval ships, lifeboats, commercial boats, and helicopters.
.
Today's forecast...better than 30 years ago!

SENNEN FARMERS' MARKET TODAY

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS 'MAN'?

. Cornwall Wildlife Trust is asking beach goers to look out for the Portuguese Man-of-War, a jellyfish-like creature, after several have washed up on Cornwall’s beaches in the past few days. The creatures can inflict a painful sting, even when they are dead. . “So far, we've had no reports of anyone being affected and we don’t want to stop people from going in the sea for a swim. We just want the public, especially those with small children, to be able to recognise these animals and be aware that they do have a nasty sting”, said Tom Hardy, Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Conservation Officer. . The distinctive Portuguese Man-of-War is not a true jellyfish, but a floating colony of closely-related hydrozoans that normally live at the surface of the open ocean. The colony floats from the bottom of an air-filled float, and has many long thin tentacles hanging below that it uses to catch fish. . Tom says, “People should immediately report any sightings of these animals to the RNLI Lifeguards on the beach and avoid touching them. Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network is also keen to hear of any that strand, so that they can plot their appearance around the coast and alert the authorities on beaches with no Lifeguard cover. They can be reached on their Hotline on 0845 201 2626” . Recommended treatment for Man-of-War stings includes immediate removal of any tentacles with tweezers, wearing rubber gloves (do not rub the affected area as this will only spread the sting) and by washing in lots of saltwater first. This can be followed by immersion of the affected areas in warm, fresh water (no warmer than bath temperature) for 20 minutes. Alternative recommendations include the application of an ice pack once the stings have been removed, to help ease inflammation. Under no circumstance should vinegar be used on stings from this animal as this can make them worse. Anyone who is worried about a Portuguese Man-of-War sting should immediately consult a doctor. . Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish are quite rare in our waters, but Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Strandings Network has had nine reports in the last five days from along the south coast. The onshore winds over the last week will have washed them in from the ocean. It is quite possible that more may wash up on South West beaches as the winds persist. . The Trust recommends that beach-goers speak to the RNLI lifeguards at the beach to find out whether any Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish have been found on that beach in recent days. .

PLEASE HELP

Couple of things you could help out with which we would really appreciate: . RUBBISH! (as Eric Morecambe once said) . . Please complete the campsite waste survey at: . http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=kROz5YvEvN55y080Hkz4LA_3d_3d . It only takes a couple of minutes and it will really help us to help the local authority get it right on how we deal with our rubbish. Remember, Penwith doubles in population over the summer months so we have to have the systems in place to deal with that and this is our chance; if we get it right now, when you come back we will be clean and green! . AND...you could win £250 towards your next holiday in Cornwall if your survey is picked out of the prize draw...got to be better odds than the lottery! . BALLS! (as we have all said from time to time) . . We are trying to build enough support for a modern, multi-functional stadium in Cornwall....we don't have one! . The Stadium for Cornwall group (S4C) have raised a petition to highlight the cause and would welcome your support. . Full details here: http://stadiumforcornwall.com/ .

DON'T FORGET DIGITAL SWITCH!

For those of you travelling with a TV this year, don't forget that the final stage of digital switchover is happening for us in West Cornwall on 5 August. So if you are bringing a TV with you on holiday this summer, make sure that it is a digital TV or pack the set top box and bring that along too. If you have booked into one of our holiday caravans, they are all equipped with digital TV/DVD and we will do all the retuning for you on the appropriate dates. If you want more information go to http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/ ; our transmitter is Redruth. .

For those who want to set up their aerials accurately, this is a useful site:

. If you put in the grid ref for our location (SW388273) it gives you a direction of 068 degrees to point your aerial. . ....or read a book...plenty to borrow from our collection in the bookcase in the laundry! .
