BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR 'THE STICK'
'The Stick' faced a barrage of shots as the Lower Treavers went down 8-2 to a well-drilled Morgarrows Duchy side at the Penzance Astro on Tuesday night. Looking distinctly green behind the mask following a heavy week-end training session in Bournemouth, the Treavers' last line of defence couldn't match the power and organisation of the orange mean machine as it rolled through its routines.
.
.
'The Stick', who has recently launched his own perfume range 'Eau de Silage', commented after the match 'It was all pressure out there...I need a week off!'. Rumours that he has been romantically linked to another member of the team cannot be confirmed as she is almost as secretive as the masked man himself, always turning her back on the lurking paparazzi.
.
.
Further rumours that a new high performance coach is shortly to join the team from Coventry also abound. The coach, who recently completed a tour of New Zealand studying the ELVs (Extra Luncheon Vouchers), is expected in mid June and is believed to be starting the team on the new Trevaskis Diet as part of his game plan.
.
.
Perhaps the new coach can help us out. Is this still legal in public? Rosie appears to think not!
.
Thanks to 'Ringers of the Week' Paul and Lynn of Windsor who pulled on the black for the cause.
.
Well played team....see you all next Tuesday....except for 'The Stick' ....who is taking a week off.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE SPRING BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND
Headline:
Sunny spells and a few scattered showers.
Today:
Many places will have a dry day with bright or sunny spells. There could be a few scattered showers around but they will be few and far between. In the sunshine it should feel pleasantly warm. Maximum temperature 17 °C.
Tonight:
Still the odd shower around overnight but most parts should be dry with clear spells. Some mist and fog may form by the end of the night. Minimum temperature 9 °C.
.
Friday:
A fairly cloudy day but apart from the odd spot of light rain it should be a dry day. Winds will be light again with perhaps some afternoon brightness. Maximum temperature 16 °C.
.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
Generally fine and warm over the weekend with light winds and sunny skies. Thundery showers are likely to develop by Monday with the risk of a few heavy downpours.
.
UK Outlook for Monday 25 May 2009 to Wednesday 3 Jun 2009:
A good deal of fine weather looks likely for many on Monday. The exceptions being across Scotland and Northern Ireland where it will remain unsettled with rain at times, particularly in the west. Also the south of England is at risk, albeit small, of catching some thundery rain drifting up from the Continent. This soon breaks down with a spell of more unsettled weather generally through the mid week period. Then high pressure building, across the south, bringing a return to largely dry weather with some sunshine. The temperature here, on the warm side at times. Further North the unsettled, and at times, windy theme is set to continue with near normal temperatures. Even here though, there will be drier, bright periods.

LOWER TREAVE GETS SOME STICK
The Lower Treavers hockey team put in a fine performance last night to beat Penzance 7-5 in the first match of the summer league. The league is a mixed team event, 7 a-side played on Tuesday evenings in the summer at Penzance Astro Park. Some spirited performances, particularly from the ladies of the team who were happy to get stuck in and win ball against some fairly robust opposition.
.
.
Question is...who is the man in the mask? Some say he normally hangs around with hookers. Some say he has strange shaped balls. All we know is we call him 'THE STICK!'.
.
.
Not all good news though...this was the result of a manoeuvre known as the Astro Turf Glide or Uncle Knobheads Last Dance (Peter Kay, Live at the Manchester Arena). Should heal up nicely by next week.
.
Well done team!
BHHPA AGM AFLOAT
.
Members of the Cornwall Branch of the BHHPA had an AGM with a difference yesterday. They held their meeting aboard The Enterprise during a cruise around the Fal Estuary enjoying a fine lunch on the way and an interesting running commentary on points of interest from John Hick (former BHHPA National Chairman and key player in the Falmouth Tall Ships organisation).
.
.
The British Holiday & Home Parks Association is the only organisation established exclusively to serve and represent the interests of the British parks industry. Membership is made up of the owners and managers of park home estates, touring and tenting parks, caravan holiday home parks, chalet parks and all types of self-catering accommodation.
.
We are grateful to Steve Kessell of Vist Cornwall who attended the meeting and gave us an update on developments in the Tourism Service at County level.
.
.
Business done, we returned safely to port and look forward to another year. Many thanks to John Hick and the Enterprise crew for their hospitality and organisation.

MICHAEL JACKSON COMES TO PENZANCE
...sorry to disappoint those who were searching for the fleet-footed chameleon of the pop world, but this is the Mike Jackson referred to.
.
.
General Sir Mike Jackson GCB CBE DSO DL, former Chief of the General Staff British Army, gave the Sir Humphrey Davy Memorial Lecture 2009 in Penzance this week entitled 'General Reflections'.
.
Sir Mike gave a thought provoking speech about where we are in global terms, how we got here and what happens next, followed by a spirited question and answer session in which he demonstrated that he can quick step and tap dance almost as well as his namesake.
.
Very much a politicians' General, Jackson gave his take on subjects as varied as 'enhanced intelligence', women in the front line and the post Cold War world.
.
Many thanks to the President and Members of Penzance Rotary Club for organising the event and particular congratulations to the pupils of The Sir Humphrey Davy School who opened the evening with one of Davy's poems, gave the vote of thanks and hosted us all most graciously. Even if General Jackson has a rather gloomy view of the world, your spirit and confidence gives us all some hope for a brighter future.

SUMMER WEATHER FORECAST 2009
.
The coming summer is 'odds on for a barbecue summer', according to long-range forecasts. Summer temperatures across the UK are likely to be warmer than average and rainfall near or below average for the three months of summer.
Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Ewen McCallum, said: "After two disappointingly-wet summers, the signs are much more promising this year. We can expect times when temperatures will be above 30 °C, something we hardly saw at all last year."
Although the forecast is for a drier and warmer summer than average it does not rule out the chances of seeing some heavy downpours at times. However, a repeat of the wet summers of 2007 and 2008 is unlikely.

SPRING
Here's a picture which captures spring...a young crab apple on the site enjoying its first blosssom.
.
.
Thought we'd better get a picture of it before today's warm easterly breeze catches it and turns the petals into nature's confetti.

...and here is another blown spring!

Fortunately Barry of http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/ is on the case!

NEW BOOTS...!
New boots all round. In our family, everybody gets treated equally....so, if I have new boots, the truck has to have new boots!
Mine are a rather splendid pair of Berghaus Explorer Treks (goretex, Flex Groove...blah, blah, blah...) from probably the best camping shop in the world...BCH Camping of Trowbridge, Chippenham and Bath. If you're serious about camping, and loads of other stuff too, then you need to visit BCH. The staff are friendly, helpful and actually know about camping (I trained one of them myself for 18 years). They also do mail order and have a great website at http://www.bchcamping.co.uk/ where they are currently giving 20% discount on your first internet order! Go on...get yourself some new kit...you know you want to!
The truck on the other hand will shortly be sporting a new set of wheels and tyres. I say new...but in line with our re-cycling policy, I have decided to try remoulds. I did a bit of research on the net, and we chuck a phenomenal quantity of used tyres into landfill. There is an alternative which is to remould a new tread onto a used carcass and effectively re-life the tyre. Now...in the past this has been seen as a bit of a questionable practice....safety issues, poor wear rates etc...but new legislation now requires that remoulds pass the same set of criteria that new tyres do...so it should be a no-brainer. I am not advocating that everybody goes out and buys retreads, particularly if you are driving some high performance super car. However, if your use involves tootling to town, the occasional shimmy down to the shops or a quick chasse around to the Mother-in-Law's then these might do the trick. Will let you know how we get on with them.
The tyres are a little more conservative than the rather exotic ones which the truck arrived with and they will be fitted to a simple steel workaday wheel. The former tyres and wheels will be 'recycled' to a new owner with a greater need for street cred than a working camp site truck.
Perhaps I should have got my old boots re-soled? By the way, the majority of buses and lorries on the road and nearly all aircraft run on remould tyres!

TOP GEAR...OR DOG OF A TRUCK?
COUNTING THE CAMPING BEANS!
Yesterday afternoon we were delighted to be invited to the opening reception of the new premises of our accountants Walker Moyle in Penzance.
The striking building sits comfortably within its surroundings and boasts numerous 'eco' features to reduce its carbon footprint.
We loved the open and airy working spaces and the buzz that a move like this gives a company.

STEPPING OUT!

EXOTIC VISITOR???
Spotted this on the low wall just outside the ladies toilets on Friday (3rd April). It might...just might...be a female Emperor Moth ....
I have emailed Ian at ukmoths for confirmation.
1643 Emperor Moth Saturnia pavonia (Linnaeus, 1758)
Wingspan 40-60 mm.The spectacular Emperor moth is Britain's only resident member of the Saturniidae family. It is reasonably common over much of Britain, occupying moorland and open country. The males, which have bright orange hindwings, fly during the daytime in search of the greyer females, which fly at night. Both sexes are on the wing in April and May.The fully grown caterpillar is green with black hoops containing yellow wart-like spots, and feeds on moorland plants such as heather (Calluna) and bramble (Rubus). http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=251
Probably popped in for a drink from the Bellamy Butterfly Bar!
(PS Confirmed as a female Emperor Moth. Thanks to Ian Kimber of UKMoths.)
END OF THE SEASON...START OF THE SEASON
As we start our season at Lower Treave, the rugby season is coming to an end. We have really enjoyed sponsoring Peter Cook of the Cornish Pirates this year; not a great season for the team, finishing mid-table and a few 'management issues' along the way, but always good to see top level sport in Cornwall and always next year to look forward to.
Just three games left now, all at home: Plymouth Albion (12th April), Doncaster (19th April) and London Welsh (25th April).
Thanks Cookie and good luck!
