General Sir Mike Jackson GCB CBE DSO DL, former Chief of the General Staff British Army, gave the Sir Humphrey Davy Memorial Lecture 2009 in Penzance this week entitled 'General Reflections'.

Sir Mike gave a thought provoking speech about where we are in global terms, how we got here and what happens next, followed by a spirited question and answer session in which he demonstrated that he can quick step and tap dance almost as well as his namesake.

Very much a politicians' General, Jackson gave his take on subjects as varied as 'enhanced intelligence', women in the front line and the post Cold War world.

Many thanks to the President and Members of Penzance Rotary Club for organising the event and particular congratulations to the pupils of The Sir Humphrey Davy School who opened the evening with one of Davy's poems, gave the vote of thanks and hosted us all most graciously. Even if General Jackson has a rather gloomy view of the world, your spirit and confidence gives us all some hope for a brighter future.
